This is how to do sports journalism…
Melinda Farrell is a cricketer broadcaster and journalist from the top drawer, highly-respected for her giant commitment and work ethic which, allied to her warmth, wit and knowledge, has earned her a global following. Reports from Arbroath was delighted when Mel found half an hour in her incredibly busy schedule to chat about her pathway into the industry.
The resultant conversation is a fascinating eye-opener for fans who will learn about the other side of the “glamorous” life of a globetrotting cricket journo. It is also a must-listen for any young woman - or indeed any young human being - aspiring to work in the industry.
There are various ways to build a career in sports journalism and not all of them are edifying. You can blag it (it’s surprising how many do, though it tends to be a short-term-only strategy). You can be a flag-waver, nice and tame for those who wants their messages sent out unchallenged. You can stitch people up, again not a great long-term policy - you only tend to stitch people up once.
Another way is to work hard, be diligent and decent, have some talent, know your stuff, not take it all and yourself too seriously and to treat people with respect. That’s a pretty cool route and it’s the one Mel took. Stir in the significant challenges of a woman becoming established in a world still heavily male-dominated - and still containing a few dinosaurs (though hopefully they will soon be extinct) - and it’s a story of which Mel, if ever she gets a moment to spare, should feel immensely proud.
